CRI scientist receives Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship

Dr. Alpaslan Tasdogan, a postdoctoral researcher in the Children’s Medical Center Research Institute (CRI) lab of Dr. Sean Morrison, received the prestigious Leopoldina Post-Doc Fellowship. This fellowship is awarded to outstanding postdoctoral scientists in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland by the Leopoldina, one of the oldest academies of science in the world.

Originally from Stuttgart, Germany, Dr. Tasdogan earned his M.D./Ph.D. from the University of Ulm where he focused on hematopoietic stem cells, leukemia, and started a residency program in Dermatology. As a postdoctoral researcher at CRI, Dr. Tasdogan will use the funding from this fellowship to study melanoma.

“My work at CRI will give me the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research and develop new methods to better understand melanoma metastasis. The CRI is staffed by experienced researchers from all over the world, offering me a unique chance to collaborate with some of the brightest minds. This opportunity wouldn’t be possible without the generous support from the Leopoldina-German National Academy of Science.”

The Leopoldina Post-Doc Fellowship is highly competitive, with about 15% of successful applicants becoming fellows. Those awarded this fellowship are expected to have a proven track record of conducting research independently, excellent research skills, outstanding academic achievements, and the potential to be part of the next academic generation.

“Aslan is one of the brightest young scientists I have met, full of ideas and the potential for transformative discoveries. He is exactly the kind of scientist we like to recruit to CRI because we agree with the Leopoldina that he will be an important part of the next generation of scientists.” Dr. Morrison said.

Other notable members of the Leopoldina at UT Southwestern include Dr. Bruce Beutler and Dr. Johann Deisenhofer, both Nobel Laureates.
